Can Singapore become Asia’s Vegas of Boxing?

Interview with Scott Mallon, VP of Top Rated Boxing Entertainment

That’s what Asia-based Top Rated Boxing intends to find out, with the company planning to stage five professional boxing bouts in Singapore next year including a world title fight in January.

Next month Leon Moore will take on Asia’s top rated challenger Marangin Marbun for the vacant WBA super bantamweight title. The six-fight card will include Singapore’s only professional boxer Mohamad Nor Rizan and take place at Suntec on January 16. This will be the first professional fight held in Singapore in three years, and the first public card for 20 years.

Scott Mallon, VP of Top Rated Boxing, says the event will be the “biggest and best fight card Singapore has ever seen”, and comes at time when boxing is growing in popularity with Singapore sending boxers to the SEA Games, and with TV series The Contender Asia and the 2010 Youth Olympic Games both taking place here.

“Singapore is really an untapped market,” Mallon says.
“It’s a top notch place to put any sport here. The market’s wide open. This is a new beginning for professional boxing in Singapore and is the first step to achieving Top Rated Boxing’s primary goal; making Singapore the Mecca of Asian boxing.”

Mallon says the sports management and promotions company is looking for sponsors for its five bouts next year, and is talking to new casinos Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands about staging fights there. It is talks with pay TV operators about televising its fights.

Mallon also contemplates in the future trying to get Filipino boxing great Manny Pacqaio to fight in Singapore, if the offer was right.
“It wouldn’t be unheard of to bring him over to fight,” Mallon says.
“It’s all about the money.”
