TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan coach John Kirwan fears a successful Japanese bid for the 2018 soccer World Cup could have a negative economic impact on rugby’s premier competition in 2019, unless the two sports work closely together.
The former New Zealand great told Reuters on Tuesday that the proximity of the two events could make it harder for 2019 hosts Japan to secure spending on Asia’s first rugby World Cup.
“It could be a negative rather than a positive,” Kirwan said. “A one-year difference is a bit tough with how the economy is.

Rather than basing the teams in the major cities where matches will be staged, organisers are planning to house visiting sides and supporters in nearby smaller communities, using 16 different venues on the north island and seven in the south.

WELLINGTON (Reuters) – Organisers of the 2011 World Cup released ticket pricing on Friday that they hoped would counter the rising costs of hosting the event and have local families flocking to stadiums. Tickets, which go on sale in April, will start at NZ$15 ($11) for children and NZ$30 for adults for many pool matches, with the final at Eden Park in Auckland to cost between NZ$390 to NZ$1250.
“We believe the ticketing policy will result in each match being played in front of full venues, showcasing New Zealand’s love of rugby and its place as a host of major international events,” tournament chief executive Martin Snedden said in a statement.
