LONDON (Reuters) – Spain is hosting more European Tour events this year than any other country and wants to protect that powerhouse status by winning the bid to stage the 2018 Ryder Cup, a leading official told Reuters.
Seven events are due to be held in Spain in 2010 and national golf federation (RFEG) president Gonzaga Escauriaza said in an interview his organisation owed it to all their tournament promoters to land the Ryder Cup vote.

MADRID (Reuters) – Spain’s professional football league (LFP) has called on the government to cut sales tax on match tickets to help the sport during a time of economic hardship.
The same value-added tax (VAT) rate of 7 percent levied on tickets for theatres, cinemas and amusement parks should be applied to ticket sales and season subscriptions instead of the current 16 percent, LFP president Jose Luis Astiazaran said.

MADRID (Reuters) – Malaga are planning a capital increase in April that aims to raise around 30 million euros ($42 million) to strengthen the La Liga club’s finances and fund a new training facility.
Almost 600,000 new shares will be issued worth 50 euros each and the club wants to encourage individual fans as well as institutional investors to take part, officials said on the club’s website (www.malagacf.com).

MADRID (Reuters) – Struggling Xerez, bottom of La Liga and in administration, must quickly finalise an agreement with their creditors, appoint a coach and strengthen the squad, new president Federico Souza said on Monday.
The tiny Andalusian club, who were promoted at the end of last season, have won just one match and scored only seven goals in 18 games on their first appearance in the top flight and have yet to find a replacement for Jose Angel Ziganda, who was sacked as coach last week.

MADRID (Reuters) – Barcelona made a profit of around 7 million euros ($10 million) in the six months to the end of December 2009, which helped the La Liga club cope with a swelling wage bill, director general Joan Oliver said.
Preliminary figures showed revenues in the period increased by around 20 percent on the year, while the Spanish and European champions also paid out more in player win bonuses, Oliver said on the club’s website (www.fcbarcelona.com).

MADRID (Reuters) – Barcelona will bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in the Pyrenees, the Spanish city’s mayor Jordi Hereu said on Wednesday.
“Barcelona has a good chance and wants to relive the Olympic dream. The city is ready and already has the experience (having hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics),” Hereu told reporters.

MADRID (Reuters) – Spanish media groups Mediapro and Prisa have agreed a deal to broadcast English Premier League matches for the next three seasons, Mediapro said in a statement on Thursday.
Mediapro and Prisa are to broadcast games on television, internet and mobile phones via their Gol Television and Canal Plus subsidiaries in seasons 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13.

MADRID (Reuters) – Barcelona’s management board has approved a three-year sponsorship deal with Turkish Airlines, the Spanish and European champions said on Friday.
Turkey’s flag carrier will pay Barca 3 million euros ($4.4 million) a year for the exclusive global deal, club director general Joan Oliver said at a news conference.

LONDON (Reuters) – Spain’s 2006 Tour de France winner Oscar Pereiro has signed a one-year deal with Astana, the team said on Tuesday. The 32-year-old former Caisse d’Epargne rider said last week he was considering retirement after a contractual dispute with Astana. He said he had agreed a deal last month but the team had then tried to re-negotiate it.
“Pereiro signed a one-year agreement with Team Astana. He will take part in the first training camp in Pisa (Italy) this week,” the Kazakh-funded team said in a statement.

BARCELONA – Barcelona have agreed a one-year contract extension with defender Eric Abidal tying him to the club until 2012, the European champions said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.com) on Wednesday.
The 30-year-old French international left back is the sixth player to have renewed his contract with Barca this season after Yaya Toure, Victor Valdes, Pedro, Lionel Messi and Carles Puyol.
The buy-out clause in his contract remains unchanged at 90 million euros ($135.5 million).
